Road to Citizenship for Former GGP Employee

Road to Citizenship for Former GGP Employee

On November 18, 2024, Hayam became a Canadian citizen after spending eleven years building a life in Saskatoon. She took her oath of citizenship in the GGP Boardroom, surrounded by staff and friends who had supported her throughout her journey.

Originally from Iraq, Hayam resettled in Canada in June 2011, bravely starting a new life as a single mother to her three children. Hayam first connected with Global Gathering Place through the Lifeskills program, which helps refugees adapt to life in Canada. The program introduced her to her local community and equipped her with essential skills for daily life in Saskatoon.

Hayam quickly became a familiar face at GGP, standing out for her determination and enthusiasm to make the most of every opportunity. She immersed herself in English classes to build her language skills, joined the Family, Fun, and Fit programs to connect with others and embrace physical wellness, took computer and driving courses to enhance her independence, and participated in the Weaving Words program to share and develop her storytelling talents. Along the way, she also sought one-on-one support from client services, never hesitating to ask for guidance or advice to help her on her journey.

What set Hayam apart was her boundless eagerness to learn, grow, and explore. She wasn’t content with simply adjusting to life in Canada, she wanted to succeed. From discovering new hobbies to embracing Saskatchewan’s unique culture, Hayam approached each experience with excitement and determination. Watching her flourish both as an active member of the community and in her personal growth was truly inspiring for everyone at GGP.

Hayam made tremendous sacrifices for her children, working well over full time to support her family and prioritize their needs. When she arrived in Canada, her youngest child was just five years old. Hayam did everything in her power to ensure her children had every opportunity available to them. Today, her youngest is thriving and is currently in university studying psychology.

Hayam highlights the excellent support she received from GGP throughout her settlement journey. She appreciates how we embraced her and in 2012, hired her as a Cleaner; her first regular job in Canada. She emphasizes that GGP has been there for her “from day one until now.”

After working as Global Gathering Place’s Cleaner for several years, Hayam started her own commercial cleaning business, Fresh and Tidy, and is now a proud entrepreneur. Recently, she purchased a house and a car, and is thrilled to be supporting her daughter through university. Hayam worked hard, soaked in every learning opportunity, was courageous to try new things, and never gave up.

Hayam’s advice for newcomers to Canada is, “First learn the language, then look for jobs, then work hard!” She also stresses the importance of balancing the memories of one’s home country and culture with Canada’s culture and systems. “Take it step by step learning the new culture.”

For Hayam, becoming a Canadian citizen is a deeply meaningful achievement, symbolizing her resilience, growth, and determination. She describes the day she received her citizenship as one of the best of her life, feeling as though she “owns the world.” To celebrate, she dreams of traveling to Italy and Spain, marking this milestone with new adventures that reflect her hard work, commitment, and passion.

We are incredibly proud of Hayam’s journey and were overjoyed to be there for her citizenship ceremony. We know Hayam as a client, an employee, and, most of all, a cherished friend. We are thrilled that she continues to stop by GGP, whether it’s for one-on-one support, to offer us a helping hand, or to celebrate her Canadian citizenship! No matter the occasion, she always has a smile on her face.
