Dedicated Client Awarded with GGP T-shirt

Mozhgan arrived in Canada in June of 2024. “My journey to Canada has been both hard and good. Moving from Iran to Saskatoon was a big change, but I am learning and trying my best. Global Gathering Place has helped me a lot, and I feel more connected because of them. It’s not always easy, but I am happy for this chance,” Mozhgan says.

Mozhgan notes the many ways that Global Gathering Place has helped her in her settlement journey and supported her as a newcomer. She emphasizes her time in our English classes which have improved her speaking, listening, and writing skills. Additionally, she highlights our programs about Canadian culture that have helped her develop an understanding of the workplace culture, and our job search support that has provided her with advice on creating a Canadian-style résumé, helping prepare for interviews, and understanding workplace expectations in Canada.

Mozhgan was in a GGP Computer class when she received a job offer from a local bakery. She remarks that one of her most important resources in landing this position was GGP. “The guidance from staff and the connections I made have been important in helping me find my current job, and I’m very thankful for all the opportunities they’ve created for newcomers like me.”

Mozhgan’s advice for newcomers to Canada is to stay patient and proactive. “First, it’s important to improve your English skills, as it will help you communicate and feel more confident. Take advantage of community programs, like those offered by Global Gathering Place, to learn about Canadian culture and work expectations. Network with people and don’t hesitate to ask for help or advice—Canadians are friendly and open to supporting newcomers. Be open to learning and adapting to new ways of doing things. Lastly, stay positive and persistent, even when challenges come up. With time and effort, success will come.”

Mozhgan says that being a newcomer can be both exciting and challenging. “However, organizations like Global Gathering Place play a huge role in making this journey smoother. As a client, I feel listened to, respected, and encouraged to take steps forward. Staff don’t just help with practical things like finding jobs or improving language skills, but they also offer emotional support, which is equally important.”

Mozhgan discusses being a newcomer “can often feel like starting over in a completely new place, and at times it can be quite daunting. Adjusting to a new culture, learning a new language, and understanding a different way of life can be overwhelming. But one of the most important things I’ve learned is that I don’t have to face this journey alone. Global Gathering Place has been an incredible resource in helping me navigate these challenges.”
