Our CNC Staff Discusses What International Women’s Day Means to Them

In honour of International Women’s Day this month, we are highlighting our Care for Newcomer Children (CNC) staff as they share what International Women’s Day means to them. These dedicated women provide exceptional childminding for children whose parents participate in our English classes and programming.

Accessible and affordable childcare is key to enabling women to actively and fully engage in society. Without it, many women would be forced out of the workforce, sacrificing economic independence. For newcomer women, the need for childcare is even more critical, ensuring access to language education and settlement support.

Thank you so much to our CNC staff for leading and caring for the next generation. Below, they share their thoughts and experiences with International Women’s Day.

“Gender equality as a human being should be the slogan of International Women’s Day. It’s not begging favour; it’s our right and we deserve it. The message of International Women’s Day is not for just one day—stand up for all girls/women with love, care and respect if you are a son, brother, husband or father.”

Momtaj Begum, CNC Team Lead

“Let’s celebrate the incredible women who nurture, educate, and empower future generations. This International Women’s Day, we honour our strength, toughness, and the boundless opportunities we help create.”

Cristina Irma Jorgenson, CNC Staff

“International Women’s Day is a time for reflection on female conditions at work, at home, and in society as a whole. It is a day to celebrate the many achievements made by women, but also to reflect on what still needs to be changed so that women are valued and respected as human beings with equal rights to achieve, without discrimination or violence. It is remembering that the devaluation and violence on women begins in the home itself and that is where change needs to begin. I hope that one day the International Women’s Day can be remembered every day of the year and that inequality and pre-conception one day disappears.”

Silvana Lopes, CNC Staff

“International Women’s Day is a time to recognize and celebrate the achievements of women everywhere. It also reminds us to keep striving for equality so every woman has the opportunity to shine and succeed.”

GGP Volunteer Found Us by Chance

Dennis first began volunteering with GGP by chance. Our Main Office was on the route of his regular walking path, and he says that as he passed GGP, “I would think to myself, I should walk in and volunteer here. After a while, on one of my morning walks, I had that same thought, and I turned and walked into the office and asked about volunteering. It all started from there.”

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Muslims observe this month with fasting, prayer, reflection, and charity. In 2025, Ramadan began on the evening of February 28 and is expected to end on the evening of March 30, depending on the sightings of the moon. The end of Ramadan marks the beginning of Eid al-Fitr, a three-day celebration.
