Alan Anderson, longtime volunteer and former board member of Global Gathering Place, received a Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Saskatchewan Nation Builders Award on March 7. This prestigious award is presented annually to “eminent individuals who have made meritorious contributions, which have made a significant impact, left a legacy, and/or provided an exemplary role model to the Ukrainian community and/or Saskatchewan or Canada.”

Alan’s incredible contributions include his book Hromada: The Changing Ukrainian Community in Saskatchewan, published in 2025. The book covers the historical background of Ukrainian settlement in Saskatchewan, including detailed accounts of settlement development and population trends of Ukrainian communities. Alan’s book also examines how Ukrainian culture in Saskatchewan has changed over time and concludes with an epilogue on how the ongoing war in Ukraine may be affecting the Saskatchewan Ukrainian community. The book is available in hardcover or paperback from the Ukrainian Canadian Congress of Saskatchewan, the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, and the publisher.

Alan Anderson has been a dedicated volunteer with Global Gathering Place since 2016, participating every Thursday afternoon in our Coffee and Conversation program, offering newcomers a welcoming space to practise their English and build meaningful connections. Alan has also served on our Board of Directors for four years, supporting our mission through his expertise, leadership, and commitment to ensuring newcomers can fully participate in and contribute to our community.

We thank Alan for his longstanding service, leadership, and impact at Global Gathering Place. His contributions have enriched our organization, strengthened the newcomer community, and advanced the work of settlement in Saskatoon.
