English Language Volunteer Finds Trust, Determination, and Hope Weekly at GGP
How did you first get involved with our organization, and what inspired you to start volunteering with us?
I started volunteering with GGP a number of years ago. I saw a write up about it and became interested in putting my name forward because of GGP’s philosophy of inclusivity and service, the geographical location, and the welcome I received. Since then, I have had the privilege of being part of a Foundation Level ESL class every week.
What do you enjoy most about volunteering in our ESL program?
To be honest, I had no idea of how rich in meaning and hope the hours at GGP would be. Every week I am very grateful to be there. I enjoy the intentional commitment that everyone has to do their very best for the well-being of the students and their families. There is lots of laughter in class at GGP. I feel that demonstrates how comfortable the students are there. They feel they belong, and I am very honoured to be part of the circle of every week.
Can you share a memorable experience or interaction with students that has stood out to you during your time here?
Very often the journey the students are on is not easy and it is clear to me that GGP is dedicated to helping. I remember a student who received a parking ticket at the hospital which required a phone call to clarify some details. During the class break, he was having difficulty with the call and so his teacher offered to help. Of course, she was put on hold for a while and when someone answered she explained the situation and resolved the confusion. This took time, but the other students understood and turned to each other to do some work practising their English together. I was able to help them. It was a beautiful example of a community being there for each other.
What motivates you to continue volunteering, and how has your experience impacted your perspective or personal growth?
Of course, during my years of volunteering, I have faced challenges and loss of my own. However, it never fails that during my afternoon at GGP I am reminded of what is needed to journey on and take the next step forward—trust, determination, hope, and being reassured that we are not alone. GGP and its students, staff, and teachers are clear examples of this wisdom. I am amazed also at how much a good sense of humour can create strength and positive energy.
What do you appreciate about the community we’ve built here, and what keeps you coming back?
It is a joy for me to see the students make progress in learning English, which is so difficult. Their determination is amazing. I learn lots too about courage and having an open mind/heart when facing change but also where else would I learn how to say ‘watermelon’ in Arabic? (Batikh)
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your volunteer experience?
It seems to me that GGP is a community that works together to open the Canada door for students and their families by equipping and helping them to walk through it and so be able to make healthy, meaningful, safe lives here.
Volunteers like Leslie are our richest resources, and we are very grateful for the invaluable contributions she and the seventy other volunteers currently supporting students in our language classes to ensure their settlement success.
