Client Breaks Out of Shell at GGP

Rose immigrated to Saskatoon from Vietnam in 2023. She describes her life in her home country as very different from her life in Canada. “I had family and friends there, and I was used to my culture and language. When I came to Canada, everything was new—the weather, the language, and the way of life. It was not easy at first, but I came here for a better future for my family and myself.”

The biggest challenge Rose faced when settling into Canada was learning English. “I found it hard to understand and talk to others. I also didn’t know much about how things work in Canada—like jobs, schools, and services. GGP helped me so much. They gave me English classes, workshops, and programs where I could practise speaking and learn about Canadian life. They also gave me confidence and made me feel welcome.”

Rose’s favourite programs at GGP are Coffee and Conversation, Let’s Speak English, Bridging the Digital Divide, Law Session, Employment Ready, and IELTS Test Preparation. “These programs helped me improve my English, meet new people, learn how to search for a job, and understand how to apply for the position I want. I enjoy the friendly environment and learn a lot from the teachers and other participants.”

Both outside and inside GGP, Rose loves to spend time with her husband and four sons and works hard to support them.

Rose’s goal for the future is to continue to improve her English so she is able to find a job in her desired field and help her children with their schoolwork. She also aims to become more independent and be a more active member of the community. “My dream is to get a job I enjoy and feel proud of.”

Rose advises other newcomers to Canada not to give up. “It takes time to adjust, but you are not alone. Join programs like the ones at GGP. Ask questions, keep learning, and stay positive. Every small step is important.”

Rose says, “I’m very thankful for everything GGP has done. Their support has made a big difference in my life. I want to share my story about the first time I came to GGP. I was shy. I didn’t want to share anything—I just sat quietly. I was afraid of making mistakes and that people would laugh at me. But the teachers and volunteers were so enthusiastic and friendly. They helped me let go of that fear and anxiety. Now, I feel much more confident. I don’t worry as much about making mistakes when I speak English with them. I always remind myself not to give up.”
