Newcomer Women Build Connections in WELL Program

Newcomer Women Build Connections in WELL Program

The WELL program meets each Thursday morning to bring newcomer women together to discuss a variety of health topics such as nutrition, mental health, skin and hair care, winter wellness, and the dimensions of health.

After five weeks together in this program, this group of women have cultivated incredible relationships with one another. Each week they share stories, experiences, history, and knowledge all while forming lasting friendships. A secure environment has been made so that everyone is willing to share their perspectives and collect new memories. The clients note the excitement they have each week in anticipation of this program. They not only learn information about health and Canada from the presenters, but they also form connections, learn a great amount from everyone in the program, and enjoy each other’s company. “This is why I love this class; we learn so much from each other,” one client notes about the program.

The group of women have become very close over the last month. They have even created a group chat to keep up with each other between sessions and will go out together for lunch following the program before returning to GGP for Coffee and Conversation in the afternoon.

Hannah, originally from Vietnam, was surprised by the differences between her home country and Canada when she first arrived. The WELL program has been a key part of her journey, helping her learn about Canadian health practices and build connections with other newcomers. Reflecting on her experience, Hannah shares, “WELL has brought a lot of knowledge about health, especially for women. By participating, we can talk together and share knowledge and experiences in our lives.”

This program has forged great relationships among the clients as they participate in talking circles, share successes, and enjoy learning about health in Canada. Janelle, the Program Facilitator, says, “our WELL program gives women the opportunity to build connections with each other while living in a new city and country. All participants have worked hard to create a safe and welcoming environment, where everyone feels comfortable sharing their stories with each other. Being the facilitator for the WELL program has been a truly rewarding experience for me, and I always leave the class feeling thankful that I had the chance to hear from so many amazing and strong women!”
