GGP Client Joins Our Group of Volunteers to Assist Other Newcomers
Mahlet came to Canada in 2023 from Ethiopia in search of a better life and further opportunities for her and her children. She initially arrived in Saskatoon on a closed work permit, working as a child caregiver in private homes.
Prior to her move to Canada, Mahlet earned a diploma in Linguistics and held various jobs in her home country. She worked as a seamstress, held several customer service positions, worked at Camerapix publisher, and also owned a hair salon business. Overall, she was a very busy single mother while working full-time and often more than that.
Recently, Mahlet’s work permit status changed to an open work permit, and she is excited to be working at an early childhood learning center as a caregiver. When she is not working, she loves crafting and often sells her creations at craft markets around the city.
“After I became a client of GGP, I signed up for most job readiness programs and that is where I have learned the most about the Canada employment system and how to prepare for the workforce for free, therefore I thank all supporting staff of GGP from the bottom of my heart. For these reasons now I can say with honor that GGP has become my second home,” Mahlet says.
“Whenever I get a chance, I advise newcomers to get assistance from GGP. GGP not only is one of the best settlement organizations in Saskatoon but also a place to learn English as a second language.”
In 2024, Mahlet was determined to give back to Global Gathering Place by volunteering as often as she could. She is passionate about helping “my fellow country men and women from Ethiopia and Eritrea who need help to learn basic English.” Mahlet was thrilled at the opportunity to use her background in linguistics while volunteering in CLB 1-2 morning classes.
One of Mahlet’s favourite memories of volunteering was the day that the English Class she volunteers in had a potluck, where everyone shared dishes from their home countries. “It is amazing how food and music connect people from all over the world under one roof,” Mahlet says.
We are thrilled when our clients join us as volunteers and seek to help other newcomers settle into their new environment. For our clients, having the chance to share their experiences with other newcomers who have faced similar situations is very valuable. We are so honoured by the dedication and hard work of our volunteers who make a meaningful difference in the lives of refugees and immigrants in our community.
