Originally from Azerbaijan and also holding Turkish citizenship, Zulfiyya Jafarova first arrived in Canada in 2025. Her biggest challenge was adapting to a new system—particularly understanding the Canadian job market and professional requirements. She is a trained pharmacist with experience working in both Azerbaijan and Turkey. “In my home countries,” she says, “I worked in community pharmacies and gained strong knowledge in patient care, medication management, and communication. Moving to Canada was a big step for me. I came with the goal of building a better future and continuing my professional career in a new system. I approached this transition as an opportunity to grow, adapt, and build a successful professional future in Canada.” Despite her professional background, she had difficulty presenting that experience in the Canadian job market. Language was another large challenge, especially in a professional context.

Zulfiyya says that “Global Gathering Place played an important role in my journey. It provided a supportive and welcoming environment where I could improve my English, strengthen my existing skills, and connect with other newcomers. Through GGP, I gained more confidence and a better understanding of life and work in Canada.” She notes that each program offered something valuable and was helpful for both personal and professional development. “I also truly appreciate all the instructors and the GGP team—their support, kindness, and dedication make a real difference.”

Zulfiyya is currently working as a Research Technician at the University of Saskatchewan, where she is involved in laboratory work and research activities. The role has given her a foothold in the Canadian professional world, allowing her to leverage her scientific background as she continues to pursue her longer-term ambitions. “In addition to my work, I dedicate time to improving my English, preparing for pharmacy licensing exams, and developing new skills that will support my long-term career goals in Canada.”

Zulfiyya’s goal is to become a licensed pharmacist in Canada, working in a hospital or clinical setting where she can make a real difference in patient care. With her background in pharmacy and her current role as a Research Technician, she hopes to one day bring scientific research into clinical practice. “I am currently preparing for the pharmacy licensing process and continuously improving my knowledge and skills to meet Canadian standards.”

In addition to her employment and licensing preparation, Zulfiyya also volunteers with GGP in our computer classes. “I was motivated to volunteer with GGP because of the positive impact it had on my own journey. As a newcomer, I experienced firsthand how important support, guidance, and a welcoming environment can be. I wanted to give back to the community and be part of something meaningful. Volunteering at GGP also allows me to support other newcomers, share my experience, and help them feel more confident as they adjust to life in Canada. It is a rewarding experience to contribute and make a difference, even in small ways.”

Zulfiyya advises fellow newcomers to stay patient, focused, and consistent. “Building a life in a new country takes time, and it is important to accept the process and keep moving forward step by step. Improving language skills, understanding the job market, and adapting to the workplace culture are all key factors for success,” she notes. “I would also strongly encourage newcomers to connect with GGP… It is not just a support center, but a community where I felt welcomed, supported, and motivated to keep moving forward.”

“Being a newcomer comes with many challenges,” Zulfiyya says, “but having support makes a meaningful difference. GGP has been an important part of my journey, providing not only guidance but also a sense of belonging… I believe that what GGP offers goes beyond basic services—it helps people build confidence, connect with others, and take meaningful steps toward their future.” It has been a privilege to walk alongside Zulfiyya, and we are rooting for her every step of the way. We know so many great things are coming!

GGP Volunteer Discusses the Determination and Resilience She Sees in Our English Classrooms

Amy Yochim began volunteering with Global Gathering Place in Spring 2024 in our LINC Foundation Literacy to 1L ESL classes. Growing up in church, Amy was taught the importance of giving back within the community from a young age and due to her job doing shift work, she is able spend her days off volunteering. She landed on Global Gathering Place after a recommendation from a friend who told her it would be a great place to give her time.
