English Language Class Volunteer Discusses the Valuable Connections Made in the Classroom

Nadia began volunteering with GGP in January of 2022 while our English classes were still offered remotely. Initially, she did not consider how long she would be volunteering; however, she continues to volunteer in the very same English Class all these years later, supporting our CLB 6-7 students every Saturday, now in-person, with our English teacher, Charlene.

As an immigrant herself, Nadia feels a strong sense of belonging and connection with the students in this class, as they have many shared experiences. Since volunteering with GGP, she has met many individuals from such diverse backgrounds and consistently appreciates the effort they invest in each class while adjusting to life in Canada.

Nadia’s favourite part about volunteering with GGP is the friendly and kind environment that goes beyond the classroom into the entire GGP office. “I have developed new friendships and valuable connections over this journey. I am also very proud that I have seen many students graduate from the class and it’s just amazing how many faces I still remember,” she shares. Nadia feels incredibly humbled when a student graduates from the class and they express their gratitude by bringing her gifts or thank you cards. “I don’t know how much I really help them because they are all very capable and hard working but it’s lovely to see that they care and see me as a part of their class.”

Nadia expresses her gratitude just as much to Charlene and the whole CLB 6-7 class. Nadia says, “it has given me a lot in terms of improving my confidence, communication, and language skills. Also, I am currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Education and being able to be within a classroom with Charlene helps me learn more about teaching… I appreciate all the opportunities Charlene provides me with to interact with students and participate in the class. It is a safe learning space where in addition to the students, I also feel comfortable to communicate and converse. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your classroom, and I would love to be part of it for as long as I can!”

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Nadia for her dedication and commitment to GGP and our students over the years. Charlene notes that Nadia “always goes the extra mile to do whatever is asked of her and she’s a whiz at helping update binders!” Language plays such a crucial role in the success of newcomers during their settlement, and we are so thankful to our volunteers who show great enthusiasm in helping with this step.
