ESL Instructor

Job Title: ESL Instructor

Employment Status: Part time

Reports to: Language Services Manager

Job Purpose: The ESL Instructor will be responsible for planning and delivering the ESL Program to adult students from different cultural backgrounds. It is essential that the ESL Instructor actively participate as part of the Global Gathering Place team in performing job responsibilities and carrying out the philosophy and goals of the centre.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and deliver lesson plans/curriculum material
  • Plan and facilitate Learning-Based Field Trips
  • Prepare progress reports and other ESL program-related duties
  • Prepare and submit statistical and progress reports as per program requirements
  • Take daily student attendance, maintain student documentation and perform data entry
  • Facilitate appropriate referrals and access to services
  • Provide resources for students
  • Participate in regular team and community meetings
  • Evaluate program delivery and make recommendations on an ongoing basis
  • In collaboration with the ESL Coordinator arrange for a substitute for missed classes
  • Keep the classroom neat and organized
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Job Specification:


Post-secondary education, minimum CERTESL certificate or equivalent, and teaching experience

Knowledge and Experience

  • Special skills in communicating with and motivating students who are struggling with ESL
  • In-depth knowledge of needs and issues of new learners
  • Demonstrated experience in working with newcomers from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated experience in program development and working with volunteers
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Canadian Language Benchmarks
  • Excellent computer skills: MS office, Internet
  • Excellent communication and team skills
  • Excellent interpersonal administrative skills: lesson plans, attendance records, monthly reports, and meeting deadlines

Working Conditions:

This position operates in a culturally diverse classroom setting. Given that clientele is also diverse, this role often faces the potential challenge to communicate and relay information effectively. Classes run weekday mornings, weekday afternoons, weekday evenings, and Saturdays to offer clients a variety of class schedules and times.
