It’s #WelcomingWeek and we’re joining an international chorus of voices celebrating the valuable contributions immigrants and refugees make to our communities. We’re also sharing how we are #CreatingHomeTogether in Saskatoon. To celebrate, we’re revisiting some of our favourite stories from 2020!
Maryam’s story and artwork beautifully speak to the experience of being forced to leave one’s home as a refugee and create a sense of home in a vastly different place. Maryam describes how participating in as many Global Gathering Place activities as possible helped her create social connections in Saskatoon. The way Maryam responds to challenges and pursues her dreams with positivity and determination makes her story a must-read.
Former GGP client Abe Eazadi is a successful entrepreneur, family man, outdoor enthusiast, and Iranian immigrant. As he shares about his experience making Saskatchewan home, the best parts of our community shine through. In this story, Abe talks about setting up a business as a newcomer, the freedom and greater sense of equality he enjoys in Canada, and his advice for immigrants who want to set themselves up for success.
When creating a sense of home in a new place, forming connections is essential. GGP clients often make their first connections with fellow newcomers and volunteers while attending our programs, including Coffee and Conversation, which you can join us for every Thursday. Volunteers provide valuable information, English practice, and so much more to newcomer clients. GGP’s Mentoring program takes these connections to the next level as clients and volunteers meet 1-on-1, and the benefits are immense.
This story focuses on how the Mentoring program helped support newcomers during COVID-19, providing much-needed social interaction and English practice. Perhaps the surprise is how beneficial these weekly meetings are for volunteers as well.
